Upon it's inception, in 1982, Horn of Plenty was the only food bank in the nation that was operated solely by community volunteers, according to federal officials from DHHS in Dallas, Texas. For this reason, Horn of Plenty pays no salaries and requires no fees for food given to its member agencies.

The backbone of the food bank is the support received weekly from contributing churches in the area, as well as contributions from Civic Clubs, charitable organizations, and offerings from concerned individuals in the community.

Horn of Plenty receives deer meat and pork through its Food For Life program. This enables local producers and deer hunters to donate animals to the Horn of Plenty, which pays for processing the meat, and then distributes it to member agencies.

Special needs include: high protein foods such as, canned meats, peanut butter and jelly, macaroni and cheese, as well as fruits and vegetables.

What can my company do?

The 1976 Tax Reform Act allows substantial tax benefits for food donation. A corporation may deduct its normal gross profit on items contributed to qualified public charity organizations for use in the care of the ill, the needy or infants. Companies are also protected by the Good Faith Donor Bill. (Oklahoma House Bill 1052)
