Dale Peter Phillips, 88, of Enid, OK, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2020, at his daughter's home, following a brief illness.
Dale was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Fred and Margaret Phillips. He married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Jean Cook, and together they raised six children. Dale graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD, and served in the US Army just prior to the end of the Korean War. Dale was employed as the lab manager for Pillsbury, Union Equity, and Farmland. After his retirement as a cereal chemist, Dale attended law school at the University of Oklahoma, graduating in 1999. He practiced law for a short time before retiring again.
Dale had many interests and hobbies. He was a member of Kiwanis and drove the Meadowlake train for years. Participation in plays at the Gaslight Theatre led to a small part in the movie "Dillinger." He loved poetry (particularly limericks) and Broadway musicals. He developed a multitude of skills in order to meet the needs of his family, including concrete (always finished with the handprints of family or pets) and mechanics (to maintain the cars of his six children). Dale enjoyed travel, frequently accompanying his children on adventures. He had a great love for coffee and conversation with friends, old and new.
Dale is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Jean and son, Jeffrey Dale Phillips. He is survived by son, James K. Phillips and wife, Dr. Jo Cartmell; daughter, Jeanne M. Phillips; daughter, Judi P. Cunningham and husband, Kyle; son, John Q. Phillips; and by daughter, Joyce K. Schwartze and husband, Bernie. Dale was much loved by his eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren, and his dear and trusted friend, Fay Driskell.
Dale was a member of St. Gregory's and St. Francis Xavier's Catholic churches in Enid. A Rosary will be held at Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home in Enid on Thursday, July 9th at 7:00PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM on Friday, July 10, 2020 at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Enid, OK. Burial will follow at St. Michael's Cemetery in Goltry, OK.
Dale strongly valued education and he loved animals, especially cats.
