Dorene was born November 13, 1935 in Clay Center, KS to Emil and Alma (Algren) Kaspar and passed away July 24, 2018 in St. Louis, MO.
She was raised with her sister in Clifton, KS and on April 15, 1956 she married Virgil Tonsfeldt, raising their family in Fremont, NE. In 1977, the couple moved to Enid, making it their home.
Dorene worked at the First Presbyterian Church for 24 years as an Administrative assistant for the pastors at the church. She adored her work and had "Presbyterian" running through her veins. She was a doer and joiner, belonging to a sorority, PEO, Presbyterian Women, Eastern Star, and two bridge clubs. She was a Den Mother, Homeroom Mother, PTA President and chaperone to everything.
The best mother and grandmother ever!
She delivered mobile meals to those in need, visiting those that did not have family in the area or could not get out themselves. She loved to travel, see and experience new things and went on mission trips to Peru, Czech Republic, Kenya and New Orleans.
Always putting her family first, Dorene was an amazing wife, homemaker, Mom, Gramma, Granny and Grammy! There is no doubt where she is now, in Heaven with her Savior, Jesus Christ, whole, healthy and still loving on all of us!
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Dorene is survived by her sister, Donnis Pierce of Concordia KS; children, Lana Davis and husband, Gary of Lenexa, KS; Jay Tonsfeldt and wife, Ranette of Edmond, OK; grandchildren, Tom Davis; Angie (Davis) Fulk; Matt Davis; Emily Tonsfeldt; Kara (Tonsfeldt) Gilbreath and Allie Tonsfeldt; five great-grandchildren, Marin, Astoria, Ryder, Hensley and Leo. She felt so blessed by each one of them!
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or Saturday Manna on Main Street with the funeral home acting as custodian of the fund.
In Dorene's own Words
I would never trade my loving family, my amazing friends, my wonderful life for
less gray hair or a flatter tummy. As I've aged, I've become kinder to myself,
and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend. I don't scold myself for
eating those chips, or for not making my bed, or for buying something that I
really didn't need. I'm entitled to a treat, to be messy, to be extravagant.
I've seen too many dear friends and loved ones leave this world too soon; before
they understood the freedom that comes with aging.
Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 3 AM and
sleep until 9:00? I will listen to those wonderful tunes of the SO's and if I, at the
same time, wish to cry over my losing my best friend and the love of my life,
Virgil . .. I will.
I know I'm sometimes forgetful and sometimes I repeat myself (but, some of life
is just as well forgotten). And anyway, I eventually remember the important
things!
Sure, over the years my heart has broken. How can your heart not break when
you lose a loved one, or when your child suffers, when things don't happen like
you'd wish, or even when your beloved pet gets hit by a car or dies? But,
broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. I
only hope I can show that understanding and compassion to others.
I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turn gray, and to
have a lot of laughing cause wrinkles in my face. Too many have nothing to
laugh about and too many have died before their hair could turn silver.
As one gets older, it seems to be easier to be positive. You care less about what
others think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right to be
wrong.
I like being old. I like the person I am. I am not going to live forever, but while
I am still here I will not waste time feeling sad about what could have been, or
worrying about what will be.
God has blessed me so greatly and I'm so thankful for the parents I had who
taught me about God!
