The Mass of Christian burial for Marcella Marie Markes, 95 year-old Enid resident is 11:00AM Tuesday, April 30, 2024 in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bison. Rev. Edward Menesco officiating. Burial will follow in Bison Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home.

Marcella, 95, a resident of Garfield County passed away Monday, Aprill 22, 2024, at the Brookdale assisted living facility in Enid where she had been a resident since January of 2022.

She was born on a farm east of Waukomis, on May 23, 1928, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Schovanec) Krejci. She attended Pioneer school, graduating in May of 1946.

After graduation she worked for a short time as a telephone operator in Enid. This was while she awaited the return of her high school sweetheart, Vincent Markes, who was serving in the occupation army in Europe.

On July, 31, 1947, she and Vincent were married at the St Joseph's Catholic church in Bison. Soon after, they moved to the Markes family farm east of Bison where they raised there seven children and lived for over 72 years.

On their farm they raised registered Brangus cattle, wheat, and operated an agricultural spraying service. Along with being a loving housewife and mother she spend many hours running a tractor in the field and driving grain trucks at harvest. Even occasionally bottle-feeding baby calves that needed a little extra care from time to time. She has a kind heart and never turned away any stray dog or cat that showed up at the door, there was always room for one more.

Marcella always had a love of music, often humming her favorite song as she worked around the house or playing her electric organ.

In later years she and Vincent took up polka dancing. They belonged to the Oklahoma Polka Club of Yukon and spend many an enjoyable Saturday night dancing the polka at the Yukon Czeck Hall with family and friends.

Marcella and Vincent were long time members of the St Joseph's Catholic church of Bison where they attended church each Sunday.

Marcella is survived by five of her seven children. Francene Longmire, and husband Steve of Lone Wolf, Tim Markes of Douglas, Carol Boyer and her husband Ron of Fredonia, KS, Karen Hawk of Chandler and Alan Markes of Drummond, nine grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Mark and Mike, and one great grandchild, Joel Vardy.
